Risk Management and Decision Making in the Outdoor

A multi-disciplinary research lab dedicated to advancing safety, decision-making, and risk management strategies for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts.

Human Factors in Sea Kayaking

Most safety training focuses on technical skills: how to paddle, how to rescue, how to read the tide. But when things go wrong, the cause is rarely a lack of technique. It’s often a failure in decision-making.

The Outdoor Risk Lab was born to bridge the gap between human psychology and the sea. We analyse the invisible traps—cognitive biases and heuristics—that influence even the most experienced paddlers. Our goal is to transform research data into practical tools for guides, coaches, and sea kayakers worldwide.

Safety Systems

Developing protocols and training frameworks for guides, instructors, and organizations.

Human Performance

Investigating decision-making, heuristics (including FACETS), and the psychology of risk.

Environmental Analysis

Studying how changing conditions impact safety margins and operational limits.
