About Outdoor Risk Lab
Our Position Statement
At Outdoor Risk Lab, we believe that while applying the study of heuristics to outdoor sports was a brilliant initial milestone (McCammon, 2004), it is essential to avoid a superficial ‘copy-and-paste’ of theories that lacks a deep understanding of their underlying dynamics.
Our mission is to go straight to the scientific roots: studying the foundational pillars established in economics, finance, psychology, and behavioral science, while applying these theories directly to the field of sea kayaking.
Decision-making at sea is influenced by far more than just the usual 7 or 8 heuristics, and understanding the cognitive biases that influence our choices is essential to control them and avoid falling into traps. This way, we can truly improve the quality of our decisions at sea.
Collaborations
To achieve this, Outdoor Risk Lab welcomes collaborations from academics and experienced practitioners who wish to contribute, share insights, and advance the understanding of risk and decision-making in our sport.
